On Thursday, President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić declared that no lithium mining will commence in the country until guarantees are obtained from top experts. Vučić addressed the public, discussing both Serbia’s economic indicators and the contentious issue of lithium mining, which has sparked widespread protests.
He assured that no mining activities or changes will occur until Serbia has received assurances from leading domestic and international experts. “There will be no digging or changes in the field. Nothing will happen in the next 12 to 18 months until we have all the necessary guarantees,” Vučić stated. He emphasized the need to gather comprehensive documentation and consult with both foreign and Serbian environmental experts to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.
Vučić stressed that these guarantees are a prerequisite for any further discussions on the matter. He also highlighted the importance of addressing issues related to individuals who sold their property during the expropriation process with Rio Tinto.
